Article reproduced courtesy of Kent Profile Magazine. Scorpion Engineering has been at the forefront of the construction of fruit storage and packhouse buildings for the last 25 years. Rob Kendall, Scorpion’s specialist, has promoted the advice based approach to the design and selling of these buildings to the end user. These clients know the importance of a high quality specification together with a well managed production schedule. “The fruit industry has advanced so much over this period of time as the demand for high quality produce stored in optimum conditions for longer periods has increased exponentially” says Rob. “In addition the environmental demands of using energy efficient components and systems have driven large scale improvements in all that we do.” Scorpion has developed essential cooperation with other key players in the construction side of the soft and top fruit sectors, and an understanding of the key elements and processes that are at the heart of these projects. Many of the largest producers in the EU are situated in the Garden of England so Kent has become a vital hub in the development of the industry in the last 20 years. It is good now to see new orchards being planted with many more new varieties, and Kent’s famous blossom tour being extended, for the benefit of the whole countryside. “At present, we are constructing a building for Peter Kedge of Hadlow incorporating solar panels, together with rain water harvesting systems, says Rob, confirming the importance of managing environmental resources responsibly.”
Hadlow College, with its vital training and career support in Agriculture, is a focal point for the industry. Scorpion Engineering has been pleased to be associated with the college, constructing buildings for its equestrian, dairy, sheep and machinery enterprises - a total of 10 buildings in all! In so many ways this is a most challenging time for British farming, to farm environmentally responsibly, efficiently and productively, despite EU politics is not an easy task but one which Rob Kendall believes is being met positively by all sectors of this vital industry.
