Scorpion – A brief history

Started in 1974 by engineer, Charles Tuson, Scorpion Engineering Construction Ltd grew its business and reputation rapidly through the latter part of the 20th century by offering high quality farm buildings across the southern counties of the UK, and supported by its own fabrication unit based in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Always at the forefront of farm building development, Scorpion was one of the first in the industry to switch away from using asbestos roof sheeting, opting instead for the replacement fibre cement product still used today.  In later years the company has continued to develop outstanding quality farm buildings and industrial units for its discerning, and often repeat, customers.

The early 2000’s saw the closure of the Corby unit as the business opted to outsource its fabrication services and reduce costs.  Understanding the importance of retaining control over quality and production responsiveness this decision was recently reversed with the opening of subsidiary fabrication company Core Steel Ltd in Hereford in 2015.

In early 2008 Scorpion’s shareholding was sold to investment company Stubbings Group Ltd, and since then has been on a journey of modernisation to respond to the changing marketplace and compliance requirements in the industry.  Through Stubbings, Scorpion has welcomed a merger with D&D Construction, based in Sussex, combining to establish a firm presence in the south east region.

In 2013 Scorpion’s quality management system successfully achieved ISO9001 accreditation as a precursor to the implementation of systems and procedures for its successful accreditation for CE Marking.

2016 saw the arrival of MD, Andre van Heerden, recruited to assist in the modernisation of the business and to drive growth.  Andre brings a broad range of construction experience, and has spent 2017 using this experience to develop new business opportunities, build a new management team, and updating Scorpion’s systems/procedures.
